the null should be placed at the pivot point of the bone you are linking it to. also make sure you have the ik chain ending with the appropriate bone. setting limits should help also. someone on the q2modeling mailing list said that sacaling down the object for ik helps prevent this but i've never had to scale down any of my objects. oh btw i thought the manuals were very helpful..
