For making the cylinder into an oval, just 2D scale it along one axis. Hold down on the scale button until the flyout appears and select 2D Scale. Then change to the appropriate Axis (X or Y) and you're off.
Extruding shapes is really easy, it's under the modifiers. If it's not setup in your menu of choices, you might have to look under the more button to find it's hiding place.
