Animation with Max

I'm wondering on what methods are there to animating
a mesh in 3dsmax without a plugin. I have bones pro
but even with the adjusted bones and influence, my
mesh don't bend the way I want it to. This is because
low polygon meshes don't respond well (and I suck :) ).

I've also tried linked xform and xfrom but that uses
up allot of memory.

CS is out of the question. $$

any suggestions?
