Enemy skins!

Having big problems with enemy skins showing up in game. It
seems as though none of the modeling tools out there are saving the directory structure right. Even NST is not doing me right. I understand that QDATA can specify absolutely and EXACT path to the skin, but QDATA looks as though it's a nightmare to learn (and I don't have the patience right now). Isn't there a way to hex edit the model to point to the right path for the skin? I tried it a few times, but each time I end up causing errors in the model. Are there any programs I'm missing that can set paths to skins absolutely?
