Setting up a Skin

This question probably has been asked many times, but here goes anyways.

I made a model in 3dsmax. Now I imported it in asc format into quake modeler. How do
I setup a wireframe to paint on? Do I simply detatch all the faces like I would if I was gonna
apply material in 3dsmax? Also i've seen allot of wireframe setups where people paint on
them. They are mostly front and backs of the model. What size does it have to be?
So basically I want to setup the model wireframe so I can apply the skin.
