very carefully.... ;P

you need to convert it to an md2 and use some program like nst or q2 modeller to get the wireframe skin. then paint the skin. if it's for a player model, make sure the skin is not linked to the model. if it is for a monster or weapon, make sure the skin is properly linked to the model. then save all your changes and you are ready to go.
