Yeah you can get it free, I have, but treat it as a demo. It's an entry level/cut down version of 3DS Max 4 and completely standalone.
Its good for learning, but you can't actually create games with it unless you are a registered user of 3DS Max 4 and paid for GMax SDK plugin.
Microsoft has GMax with their Flight Sim 2002 and there's a Quake III Arena SDK download for the free version of GMax. But if you're like me and actually want to MAKE something, not toy around cuz you can't win on a shoot-em-up, then the free version isn't useful. You can't export, you can only save in the free GMax format and most parts of 3DS Max 4 you like, aren't there.
If anyone knows where I can get the GMax DEV version from without me paying or registering, please email me, I really need it :)
