The Night Before Quake 2
'Twas the night before Quake 2 and all thru the house
I had setup multi-playing networks each with a mouse.
the networks were strung with thinnet with care
in hopes that Quake 2 soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds
while visions of Stroggs danced through their heads.
and I had just bought a new CPU
boy I was glad for a Pentium II
When out on the 'net, Blues news was a-posting
I dialed right in to see what it was boasting.
Off to my browser I flew like a hound
Oh goddammnit !! The server was down!!
Frustrated, convinced that my ISP blows
I glanced over at the nearby windows.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a group of Ferraris, loaded with gear!
With a thin young driver, leading the pack
I knew in a moment, must be John Carmack.
Over the speed limit, his band of cars came
He whistled, he shouted, and called them by name
"Now Brian, now Christian!
Now American and John!
On Adrian, on Tim,
On Kevin, Zoid, and Paul!
To the top of the driveway, but don't hit the wall,
stop your cars, stop your cars, stop your cars all!"
Leaving his rod, he entered the house
Walking quietly so as to not wake the spouse.
He was dressed in a T shirt, and a pair of jeans too-
He was here in my house, big w00h00!!
Boxes of Quake 2 he had flung on his back
he looked like a software pirate, selling his stash.
Those boxes, how leet! The shrinkwrap so tight!
The Q on the front screaming let's go and fight!
A wink of John's eye and a twist of his head
I knew I'd be playing until I was dead.
He spoke not a word but went right to his work
Installed it on the network, then turned with a jerk
Placing a hand inside of his jeans,
out came his keys, ooh, how they gleamed!
He sprang to his car, with id's team in tow
Notably minus one John Romero.
But I heard him exclaim as he sped out of sight
"Stroggs for all, and to all........Thank God this
thing is finally done and over with! Do you have any
idea how hard and long we worked on this? We only got
4 hours of sleep a night for over 6 weeks! And do you
know what Paul Steed smells like without a bath for 3
days?.... and you're already talking about Trinity?
JUST KIDDING ! ENJOY !!"
