Permedia2 Overclocking ---------------------- Hey! Lemme see if I can remember all of this....It's not real hard.... It DOES involve editing the system registry, so the usual "back the shit up" precautions apply. go to the following registry key My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\000x The x is there, since some people may have had more than one video card in since they did a complete Windows install... Look through your 000x folders until you find the one relating to the Permedia2. Should be easy to spot, by the text in the "DriverDescription" key. Go to the DEFAULT folder, and look for a key called systemclock. It MAY not be there, if you are using 3DLabs reference drivers (currently these are the BEST for all Permedia2 boards). If it's not, create one called "systemclock", as a DWORD key. Now click on it and select MODIFY. You will need to enter a hexadecimal value here. The stock chip clock rate is 80mhz (hex 50). Most boards at least clock this chip to 83 (hex 53). Without a heatsink, going above 90mhz gets tricky. With a heatsink, you can go theoretically as high as 100mhz on a 10ns SGRAM board, and 125 on a 8ns SGRAM board. I've been assured by a gentleman at TI, that you are unlikely to damage the chip by overdoing it a little. You'll know the first time you play Quake and the screen freezes on you. Just take the clock rate jumps in a few mhz steps. If the system freezes, boot back in safe mode, edit the systemclock key down a little, and reboot... Inasfar as the 125mhz rate goes, this has been achieved by 3DLabs, on the reference design AGP board they used in their website benchmarks to get a 501 in 3DWinbench98, on a PII-300. I have kept my Creative GB Exxtreme 4meg board (10nsSGRAM) at 96 since the first week I got it, and have had no problems ONCE I installed a spare 386 heatsink/fan I had lying around (How's that for overkill cooling :D). Over the stock 83mhz on the Creative drivers, clocking to 96 got me about a 15-20% performance increase.....Your mileage may vary..... That about covers it.....Lemme know if you have any questions spiercy@theonramp.net
