Deathmatch Levels July 98

Summed up in one word... HUGE! Hal9000 created this map for Uberfest '98. Don't know much about it. The detail in this level is amazing. From the giant reactor to the moving crates. There are even some sneaky lava traps in here that reminded me of "Claustrophobopolis" in Quake. Quite possibly, still my favorite Quake 1 DM level (and I've played A LOT!). The weapon placement obviously had a lot of thought put behind it. The BFG10K is in there and its not hard to find, but I never figured out how to actually get it (Anyone?). Hal9000 may have just put it in there just to tease the BFG people. The ambient sounds in this were placed so that in just the right parts of the maps it would be quiet and ominous. The only way to appreciate just how great this map is, is to download it. There is another map in the zip which is also very good and worth a look co-authored by Andrew "LaRd" McIntyre entitled "The Law". UberDM comes HIGHLY recommended.

More outstanding work by Michael. Relatively small in size, but none the less great. Another map that forces you to listen what is happening around you. Many great ::ahem:: camping ::ahem:: spots in this one, so watch out. Lighting is good and goes excellent with the chosen textures. The theme is some sort of an installation, I think. Many places where you could get the Sh!t scared out of you, if you don't know what's going on around you. I love when that happens :). I hope to be doing more reviews from this particular author in the near future.

Hal9000 rarely ceases to amaze me. I'm not sure about this map housing 32 players, I would say only about ten to twelve. The use of indoor water in this map is done very well, considering it has more of a base or installation type theme to it. Textures are very well done, and the lighting feels right. Expect to do some searching for the quad and have a rocket launcher handy when you find it. Its hard to get lost in this and once you know the locations of your favorite weapons, expect some quick kills. The layout isn't too complicated so using it with bots should be a breeze.

Very impressive Michael. The overall feel of this one is compact and due to the nature of it, requires you to be a little more careful with some of the bigger guns. I've been impressed be some of the unique situations in this last bunch of levels I've looked at and this one is of no exception. I particularly liked the way the quad was acquired. Lots of places to go for the person who likes to explore and all you snipers out there will enjoy the way Michael has built this. Trust me on this one, listen to what is going on around you. If you know the sounds of the game, it helps you out in the long run. Another highly recommended level.

Another map that poses some unique situations. First off, this is one of the best uses of a wind tunnel that I have encountered in a DM map, it's exactly where it should be. The large rotating agitator that houses the BFG10K is placed so that any person trying to get the BFG is bound to be seen by someone. Textures are great throughout and lighting fits the dark, gritty theme of the level. A smart person would use those darker areas to their advantage and go for some sneaky kills. I would have to recommend at least seven people in this one, with all the darkness it would be wise to watch your back. :)

Another well made DM map. With some unique architecture and situations, this level gives the user something new. The weapon placement is good. Power-ups are placed in a tactical way and gives advantage to the player who knows how to control them. Textures fit the theme, and never stray out of context. It's of decent size and could hold around ten or eleven people before becoming too over-crowded. Well done and I look forward to more from this author.

I really like this one. Reminded me of 'The Slimy Place', and that's a good thing. Consisting of mostly catwalks over slime, there is little room for error. Really separates the calm, collected players from the nervous and jumpy ones. Thankfully there is a teleporter in the slime (well...really on a platform floating on the slime) that help those over anxious players stay alive. Textures are amazing though out the map, adding great detail to an already stunning map. Weapon placement is excellent and player starts are positioned well. Another must get map that I thoroughly enjoyed. Keep up the good work.

It took me a few plays to really realize how well this level is put together. There are many ways to enter most of the rooms, which added much more tactical thought into playing it. Not just a run and gun map. I was pleased with the use of textures, though the lighting was a bit on the dark side, which added even more depth to the map. Although whole rooms should not be completely dark. Steve is the author of other maps as well and they all deserve a look. Well done.

WOW! This being my first review here at AWOQ2, I thought I would give you the best. It really doesn't get much better than this. First off, the level comes in a .pak file because of new ambient sounds and some new textures. I might add that these are perfectly suited for the map. The pak is named pak04 so if you have to rename it do so. The weapons and powerups are placed with amazing balance, keeps the confrontations fast and furious. The download is rather large, around 3.3meg, but well worth it. Its big enough that you could probably get away with 14 or 15 players, any more would be over-kill. If anyone at ID is reading this, you should really consider this guy for a position. It really is that good. I could praise this 'till I burst, but I won't. What are you waiting for? Stop reading this and download the level...NOW!
